‘Surveys from a Small Island’ opens August 26 in Ipswich

Seven Photography and Graphic Design students from UCS and Senior Lecturer in Photography Heike Löwenstein invite to the Opening of Surveys from a Small Island – An exhibition inspired by New York on Friday 26 August from 3-6pm. The show continues in the Foyer of the Waterfront Building until October 16.

The work was created during a student trip to New York in June, in response to the city and to Löwenstein’s exhibition Surveys of a Small Island curated by meatyard arts that was showing at the same time.

After a ‘pop-up’ exhibition on the Highline on their last evening in New York the group now shows a considered selection of work from New York as well as visuals and objects that have been created in response to the visit by two Graphic Design students, Yvette-Marie Ormsby and Jonanice Kitt. The photographic surveys range from matchbox pinhole photographs of Coney Island by Tom Rose to quiet observations of private moments performed in public by Caroline Guthrie, comments on people working in service of others by Neil Salter and large format polaroids of the Highline by Natalie Martin. Kristine Diza has decided on a grid of images of a day out in New York and Löwenstein will show experiments with vertical panoramas that challenge viewing conventions. Tom Rose and Andrew Biddulph (who remained back home) collaborated on a visual contemplation of time and space, shot in New York and the UK at the same time.

The development of the exhibition has been facilitated through the blog of thenetwerk®, the photography research group that Löwenstein has founded with colleagues in 2008.

The exhibition may encourage and inspire all current students to create more surveys of the (small island) UK, which could be exhibited next year in New York – just an idea …

Grid of images it is….

Unfotunately due to being unwell I was unable to work on my previous idea, so I’m back to my original concept of images printed in a grid. The title will be People & Places. The images are framed using black wood frames at a size of 10 x 8. Printed on glossy paper, with black spacing between the individual photographs to match the frame. I think the size works for the images as it makes the viewer look into it more and see the details of the individual images. Here’s the final images used as prints.

Okay so i got my 5 frames today. They’re black with a 1 inch depth. The frames are quiet thin as i didn’t think a bigger one would suit going by the size of my images. BTW the picture you see here is a diagram just to show how big the frames are & not anything to do with how they may be hung.

Final Photographs/Gallery Plan.

OK. Finally I’ve sorted out what I’d like to exhibit, to what sizes, and to a preferred presentation (obviously there’s limited space so will have to compromise and negotiate !!)

All my photographs will be mounted onto the MDF being ordered.

I have 2x A1 photos of my sun/time project (i need to rename this from Noon to Noon). I have chosen the following photographs from this project. Mine, on the left was taken at USA 11:00:00 time, and Andrew’s on the right was taken at UK 16:00:00 time, but both were taken at the exact same time. Me and Heike were discussing this concept, and that there is no word in our language used to describe this ‘now’. Might be interesting to create a title for this piece…

My second piece is from my matchbox pinhole series taken at Coney Island. Most of the shots were quite blurred as i was working with hand holding 1-2 second exposures, but 5 came out sharp (for a matchbox !!), and i edited them down to 3 to convey a ‘fishing’ theme. the 3 photos are calming and simple, might call this work Gone Fishing. The prints are all on 10×8″ pearl paper, with a 1″ border all round. I would present these in a row:

My third piece consists of 1x A0 (on the length) print of Brooklyn Bridge at night, panoramic (2 photos stitched together),probably a pearl/satin/lusture paper. This would be accompanied by 2x A3, portrait orientation, one of Ground Zero, one of 10th Avenue taken from the Highline. They would hang one either side of the larger panorama, again on the same paper:

 

 

And also, here’s a little sketch of what would look cool on the hang, sun/time on the left, Gone Fishing in the middle, New York Night on the right:

And finally (!!), for Yvie’s attention, this is how your shelf could work. The hook would hold onto 2 ‘d-rings’ screwed into the back of the shelf, and some wood would need to support the bottom of the shelf where that little box is if you get me !!

NYC exhibition: Update from meeting Thursday 11

1. Next Meeting
Thursday 18 August 11am Room T020 or fusion lab – please could everyone make an effort to attend

2. Exhibitors
Currently Caroline, Natalie, Yvie, Jo, Kristina, Tom, Neil & Heike. Heike speaking off-line to Simon about late submission/entry

3. Preparing your work
All work to be printed (and framed/mounted if at all possible) by next Friday 19th August. No guarantee that work not ready by then will make it into the Show. We all need to see quality of prints/artwork well before the hanging day. Please bring your prints/final work to the Thursday meeting if at all possible. For those mounting on MDF, ensure a 5mm or more ‘bleed’ – i.e. your print is 5mm LARGER on all four sides than the mount size you are using

4. Cost of drink&food, for Opening Night and poster printing
Estimated at £80, so £10 from each of the exhibitors. Please bring to the next meeting (18th)

5. Slideshow
Please could you bring any images you wish to be displayed in the running slide show to the meeting next Thursday on CD/DVD/memory stick – longest side of landscape image 1600 pixels, portrait images 1200 pixels, 72dpi resolution; please order images into separate folders for landscape and portrait images.

6. Hanging the Exhibition
Hanging will take place Wednesday 24 August – all day long until it’s done – all to attend please.

7. MDF
For those not organising their own frames/mountings, there will be an order placed asap for the black MDF Heike has recommended. We’ve worked out the amount of MDF each person requires based upon the size they wish to display their work at as follows (it’s £8:00 for A0, £4:00 for A1; £2 for A2; £1 for A3 and 50p for A4) :-

Tom £19.50
Kristina £2.00
Neil £12.00

PLUS the delivery charge of £80 will be split evenly, that’s another £13:50 each

That buys us 3 sheets which are ~£24.00 each at size 2500xx x 1200mm which splits into 3 A0 sections per sheet. Caroline is ordering one more sheet that she’s paying for all herself *

Can you each confirm asap that you are OK with that cost so we can order this weekend? The plan is to get the suppliers to cut each sheet into 3 A0 sections which MAY incur additional cost, Heike is enquiring.

Reuben (Fine Art Dept. Technician) will chop up the sheets to size the week commencing 22 August, so you will need to organise hot press/mounting asap that week. You MUST have your prints ready for mounting for first thing Monday 22nd

Heike and Caroline are organising ordering and up-front payment which you will each have to refund by next Thursday 18 August

Coney Island, colour 35mm

As well as New York Night, Noon to Noon, Puerto Rican Street Party, Slaps Tournament, Gay Pride and Matchbox Pinhole of Coney Island, I also produced this film at Coney Island. There are some really nice portraits which I’m considering to exhibit as well. So, i’ll post them up for some quick feedback, then finalise what I’m actually doing !!

Beach Break

ok so this is the only image that is complete at the moment out of the 3 i’m going to exhibit tht i plan to have as my biggest (42cmx15cm). the others shall be my graphic design of the John Lennon memorial & a small series of 4 images of the same skyline, each done in a different way that represents NY. I hope to have the other images complete by the end of the week.
